Additional Property Attributes

The Subject Property is the former Springfield Lake Sanitarium, a tuberculosis hospital. The initial building was started in 1908 and opened in 1915 Sunshine Cottage was opened in 1922, and Sunshine Village was opened in the 1960s. The initial building could treat 72 patients an expansion in 1923 allowed it to treat 200 patients. Additional expansion occurred in 1957. Legislation was passed in 1959 permitting tuberculosis hospitals to admit other patients because of this, additions were built in 1963, 1975, 1979, and 1984. Sunshine Cottage was given to the Childrens Service Board in 1947 and used for abandoned and abused children. The various cottages and buildings have been used for both adult and adolescent chemical dependency treatment programs. In 1991, the Challenge Golf Course was opened on the western portion of the Subject Property. The Sanitarium was renamed in 1997, and joined the Akron General Health System in 2005 as Edwin Shaw Rehab. Akron General relocated the facility in December 2009. Currently, two of the cottages are occupied by county-run alcohol rehabilitation programs. All remaining buildings are unoccupied. The Challenge Golf Course is still operational, and operates out of a small club house on Flickinger Road.

The Challenge Golf Course is still operational, and operates out of a small club house on Flickinger Road. The 2013 assessment performed with EPA's brownfield assessment funds was motivated by interest by a Cleveland-based educational institution in this property. Details of the inquiry are not public. The property owner, Summit County, had shouldered high maintenance costs due to vandals and thrill seekers trespassing on the property. The Village where this facility is located is in fiscal distress. Both entities continue to seek an end user after the potential interested party did not show an interest after the completion of the environmental investigation. County maintenance and police surveillance continue.
