Additional Property Attributes

This property was an abandoned gas station that the Town of Exeter acquired to expand a municipal facility parking area. Future plans may incorporate the property into a redesigned municipal facility or to expand an adjacent park.

Former Use: The Site is a 0.12-acre parcel of land located at the intersection of Court and Bow Streets in downtown Exeter, New Hampshire. The Site is a vacant gasoline filling station that ceased operation in 1997. One small kiosk-style pay station building is located in the approximate center of the parcel with fuel dispensers formerly located near the street corner. With the exception of the building location, the concrete dispenser pad area, and a small gravel area where some below grade piping was removed, the entire Site is paved. Historical use records indicate that the Site was first developed as a residence sometime between 1802 and 1845. By 1874, the Site had been converted for carriage manufacturing, which may have included blacksmithing and/or painting. From at least 1885 until at least 1923, blacksmithing and/or painting is known to have been performed on the Site. As carriages were replaced with automobiles, the Site was converted to a garage and gasoline dispensing facility by 1924. Sometime after 1924 the building on the Site was razed and the existing kiosk-style building was constructed by 1964. The Site remained in use as a filling station until 1997 when the station ceased operation.
