Additional Property Attributes

The buildings have been initially renovated and necessary repairs have been completed to address water damage, damage incurred by tenants, and general disrepair from underuse. The property is being held by the county land bank for future redevelopment.

Former Use: Property was developed with commercial buildings by 1888. The commercial buildings were occupied by various retail and service operations (e.g., grocery store, clothing and shoe stores, beauty salons, restaurants, jewelry stores, etc.) from the 1880s through the late 2000s, when portions of each of the buildings were vacated. Between 1888 and 1900, a canal associated with the Kalamazoo River was located on the eastern side of the Property. The canal appears to have been filled by 1907. By 2012, three of the storefronts included in the 111-119 South Superior Street Property were occupied by various commercial tenants (general store, vision center, and restaurant), and the fourth storefront was vacant.
