Additional Property Attributes

The City of Chicopee (City) acquired ownership of the former Racing Oil site (RTN 1-00044) located at 181 Center Street in January 2012 for back taxes. The Racing Oil site was identified as a key redevelopment property in the City�s West End neighborhood during PVPC's EPA-funded Area-Wide Brownfields plan for the West End..

Former Use: This site was used as a gasoline service station dating back to the 1920s and has been vacant since the 1990s. A gasoline release has been identified to soil and groundwater at the site which has migrated downgradient impacting at least 184 Center Street. Free phase petroleum product (light nonaqueous phase liquid - LNAPL) has been identified in at least one well at the site and vapor intrusion issues have been reported to MassDEP. The most recent technical submittal to MassDEP was a January 2006 Phase IV Remedy Implementation Plan Addendum. The Phase IV recommended the implementation of an Activity and Use Limitation (AUL), installation of two biosparging systems and continued monitoring of natural attenuation processes downgradient of the source area. Based on the MassDEP file, no additional work has been completed since 2006.These EPA funds were used to screen for volatile organic vapors in five existing vapor probes on a property (178 Center Street) that is downgradient from the source property (181 Center Street).
