Additional Property Attributes

Redevelopment of the site will include a proposed accelerator kitchen which will have a positive economic impact for the area. In addition, the proposed redevelopment will include upper floors for health and wellness programs for vulnerable populations in the Battle Creek, with a focus on senior and families with children. It is planned for completion in 2022.

Former Use: The Property was developed with residences by 1887. By 1899, residences on the southern portion of the Property had been razed and a warehouse and railroad line spur had been constructed. By 1907, residential buildings remained along East Van Buren and the remainder of the Property was developed with the existing building (identified as a pattern vault), warehouse/sand house, and railroad spur associated with the American Steam Pump Co. The southeastern portion of the Property was used as a lumber and flask yard. Marsh Steam Pump Co./American Marsh Pump Inc. operations (pattern vault, warehousing, pattern shop, foundry supplies storage) continued on portions of the Property through the 1950s. By 1961, the warehouse/pattern shop building and railroad line spur appeared to have been demolished, and by the early 1970s, the residential buildings on the Property appeared to have been demolished and the areas around the existing building were developed with parking lots. The building was owned by the St. Phillip church and used as a music center and recreation center until approximately 2010, when the church began using it for storage, a second-hand store, and volunteer meetings.
