Former Use: The subject property was originally developed by the Chicago Lumber Company in the late 1800s. A charcoal-iron blast furnace was constructed on the property in 1890 and a wood distillation plant was constructed in 1897. Several charcoal klins and other buildings associated with the charcoal-iron blast process and wood distillation process were present on the subject property from at least 1890 unti 1923 when operations were abandoned. All structures, with the exception of one former machine shop, were razed in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The former machine shop was utilized by the City of Manistique Streets Department as a salt storage shed until the late 1980s or early 1990s when it was demolished. The subject property remained vacant from that time until 2004 when Online Engineering constructed a manufacturing building on the southwestern corner of the subject property. The remaining portions of the subject property remain vacant.
