Additional Property Attributes

Note on VCP: While Alaska does not have a formal Voluntary Cleanup Program, this site was entered into our Contaminated Sites database in 1990 and has since been tracked by DEC project managers. Brownfield funding has helped move this site forward through these first comprehensive assessment efforts.

Former Use: The subject property was first developed into a saltery in 1892. From 1895 to 1984 it was operated as a cannery by Alaska Packers Association and DMC Properties, Inc. In 1985 ownership was transferred to the Pilot Point Community Council, and then in 1992 to the City of Pilot Point, the current owner. The property encompasses two former cannery buildings and associated structures, including a former messhall and cook house, former bunkhouse, former web loft, former provision warehouse, and former private residence. In 1990 a report of a release of Bunker C fuel from one of the fuel-storage tanks on the property was reported to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. No cleanup has occurred to date.
ID Number (if Applicable): Hazard ID # 1028 Enrolled: 05/25/1990
