Property Highlights

Site soils are impacted by lead, arsenic and antimony. Lead impacts to the water and sediments in the brook running through the property have been detected. DEP began a Phase II Site Assessment through Chapter 128A funds. The City will complete the Site Assessment work using the City's active EPA Assessment Grant. Holyoke also received a cleanup grant to remediate the site once assessment is complete. Holyoke is hoping to partner with Nuestras Raices and Mount Holyoke through the partnership created with their EPA CARES grant to develop an educational opportunity to utilize phytoremediation at the site. The future use of the site will be 2 residential building lots, with the remaining 15 acres being placed into conservation land. The Site also received an EPA Land Revitalization Grant for reuse planning of the site and the feasibility of developing an environmental learning center at the site. The property also received a TBA Grant to complete a risk characterization of the site.

Former Use: The City of Holyoke took ownership of the Mountain Road property via eminent domain in 1924, �to provide and maintain suitable grounds for parade, drill and small arms practice for a detachment or command of the Volunteer Militia�. The Site was reportedly used by the military for firing range practice from the 1920s to the late 1970s.
