Yes
Government Controls
Petroleum related contaminants and chromium were detected in soil samples collected beneath the fuel dispensers and product piping at concentrations exceeding the DCDEQ soil-to-groundwater MSCs. PAH's and lead were detected above NCDEQ PSRGs. Therefore, institutional controls will be required to limit unrestricted use.

Petroleum related contaminants and chromium were detected in soil samples collected beneath the fuel dispensers and product piping at concentrations exceeding the DCDEQ soil-to-groundwater MSCs. PAH's and lead were detected above NCDEQ PSRGs. The Town of Spindale plans to develop the property for commercial use. A parking area is a likely development to support future commercial development. The parking lot will act as an engineering control to limit exposure to contamination in subsurface soils.

Additional Property Attributes

The site is the location of the former Crain Service Station. In May 2016, the Town of Spindale demolished the abandoned service station, cafe and fuel island canopy. Following demolition of the on-site structures, EPA conducted a Phase II assessment, at which time USTs were removed to allow for full access to potentially contaminated soils. Former USTs had been removed from the site in 1993.

Former Use: The site is a former service station located at 411 East Main St in Spindale, Rutherford County, NC.. The site has been listed as 257 E Main but reportedly, the city had renamed/renumbered parts of town, including this property. The site formerly contained a 3,000 sq ft building with a 2,000 sq ft canopy that covered the pump islands. The town of Spindale demolished all structures on the site in May 2016, prior to EPA's Phase II assessment. Future land use may include commercial and/or parking for access to the Thermal Belt-Rail Trail.
