Additional Property Attributes

The Bayhorse Townsite is a very picturesque ghosttown located in mountains of central Idaho. The town was operational from the late 1870's through the 1920's. There are numerous building in different states of repair but the most signicant are the mill building and a rock structure noted for storing ore bullion. The site has the remains of 9 kilns that was used to make charcoal for operation of the smelter. This cleanup project allowed IDPR to open the historic ghosttown to the public in a safe manner by developing clean travel areas and keeping the visitor away from the contaminated areas.

Former Use: The Bayhorse townsite is one of 5 parcels within an historic mining district. Idaho State Parks and Recreation has purchased the 5 parcels (totaling 500-acres) for preservation as a State Park. The property is a 162-acre parcel gently to moderatly to steeply sloped, and varioulsy covered with conifers, mountain mohagony, sagebrush and high desert shrubs and grass. This property contains several historic mining structures, 5 domed charcoal kilns, a smelter, mill buildings, and the town property(numerous buildings), etc.
