Additional Property Attributes

The site was a former Schwegmann's Giant Supermarket store (the pre-cursor to Super Walmarts) and includes an abandoned gas station. Due to some bad investments, Schwegmann's went bankrupt and was sold to Kohlberg & Co. LLC in 1997. The USTs were placed out of service in 1999. The site was then purchased by Berk Cohen Associates in 2003. Both the building and the gas station remained vacant through 2013. Event Rentals, a local event supply company, was looking for space to move their growing operations. A Phase I ESA of the property identified the USTs at the site that needed to be addressed prior to redevelopment. In order to secure a bank loan to purchase the site and for assistance in addressing the environmental concerns, Event Rentals enrolled the property into RPCs Brownfield Redevelopment Program. The site lies within a special redevelopment district as designated by the City of New Orleans, created as a result of this development to encourage the revitalization of the area. RPC completed a Phase II assessment including regulatory closure and removal of the USTs. The site is now redeveloped as Event Rentals expanded facilities with 104 jobs and $2.8 million of investment.
